Antminer S21 vs Avalon A15 in Indonesia: Which One to Buy

Real catalog specs for every in-stock Antminer S21-family and Avalon A15-family model, compared on hashrate, power, efficiency and price per TH, plus what actually matters for a buyer running one on Indonesia's 230V grid.

    9 min read

For most Indonesian buyers right now, the Antminer S21 family is the safer default — it has the deepest presence on Indonesian marketplaces and the better efficiency numbers across every matched tier. The Avalon A15 family is not a weaker choice, though: it consistently undercuts the S21 line on price per terahash, sometimes by 15% or more. Which one is right for you depends on whether you're optimizing for lower upfront cost or lower running cost. Below is the real spec data for both lineups, pulled directly from our live catalog, so you can do that math yourself.

The Avalon A15 line in our catalog is air-cooled only — there's no hydro or immersion A15 variant right now (Canaan does sell hydro/immersion units, but they're built on the older A1566 platform, not A15). If you specifically want hydro or immersion cooling from Canaan, that's a separate conversation from this A15-vs-S21 comparison — our companion guide on the Avalon A15 for Indonesia covers the full A15 lineup in more depth, including a lower-cost binned A15XP unit we also stock.

The Antminer S21 family, by contrast, spans all three cooling types, which matters more than it might look on a spec sheet — see the climate section below.

Which one is more in demand in Indonesia right now?

We checked Indonesian marketplace activity before writing this. The Antminer S21 family has noticeably deeper presence: Tokopedia runs dedicated aggregator pages for the S21, S21 Pro, S21 XP and S21 Hydro individually, and multiple independent Shopee sellers list S21-family units directly, including bundled multi-unit listings that suggest reseller and small-farm buying, not just single-unit hobbyists.

The Avalon A15 has a real but thinner footprint — mostly through Tokopedia's general "Avalon Miner" aggregator page rather than model-specific listings, plus at least one Southeast-Asia-facing reseller (Apexto Mining) running a dedicated Indonesian-language A15 Pro product page. That's a genuine signal of intentional A15 targeting in the region, just a smaller one than what exists for S21.

We're not going to manufacture a percentage or a listing count neither of us actually measured — that's the honest read of what's visible on the two markets right now, and it's why we lead with the S21 family as the default recommendation for most buyers, while still stocking the full A15 line for the price-sensitive buyer who wants it.

Efficiency vs price per terahash: the real trade-off

The two lineups split cleanly on one number: dollars per TH/s of hashrate.

    ModelPriceHashrate$/TH
    Antminer S21$3,150200 TH/s$15.75
    Antminer S21+$3,600216 TH/s$16.67
    Antminer S21 Pro$4,950234 TH/s$21.15
    Antminer S21 XP$5,850270 TH/s$21.67
    Avalon A15$2,700195 TH/s$13.85
    Avalon A15 Pro$3,150250 TH/s$12.60
    Avalon A15 XP$3,600270 TH/s$13.33

At every comparable tier, the Avalon A15 line costs less per terahash to buy — often 15-40% less. But that's only half the equation. Efficiency (J/TH) determines what you pay to run it, and there the pattern flips: the S21 family is consistently more efficient, meaning lower electricity cost per TH/s over the life of the machine. Compare the S21 Pro (15.0 J/TH) against the similarly-priced A15 Pro (17.4 J/TH) — the A15 Pro pulls about 16% more power per unit of hashrate.

So the real decision isn't "which is better" — it's whether you're weighting upfront capital or ongoing power cost more heavily. A buyer with cheap, fixed-rate power and limited capital may prefer the Avalon A15's lower entry price. A buyer paying more per kWh, or running for years rather than one cycle, is better served by the S21 family's efficiency.

Which one for Indonesia: climate, cooling and the 230V standard

Electrical compatibility. Indonesia's household standard is 230V/50Hz (SNI 04-3892.1.1-2003, based on PLN's SPLN 1:1995 standard) — you'll also see 220V used colloquially, referring to the same supply under an earlier PLN revision. In practice, single-phase household power runs roughly 220-230V ±10%. Every unit in both tables above ships with a PSU in the standard 200-240V input range, so neither family needs a step-up transformer on Indonesian household power. Always check the specific PSU's rated input on the product page before ordering, since PSU specs can vary between hardware revisions.

Climate and cooling. Indonesia is tropical — Jakarta and Surabaya both run hot and humid year-round, with Surabaya's East Java grid area seeing 31-35°C ambient and roughly 80% humidity, worse September through October. That's a genuinely harder environment for air-cooled hardware than a temperate climate, because ambient heat eats into the thermal headroom air cooling depends on.

This is where the two lineups diverge structurally, not just on spec-sheet numbers. The Avalon A15 family we stock is air-cooled only, so if you're running it in Indonesia, ventilation and airflow planning aren't optional — undersized ventilation in a 30°C+ room will force thermal throttling regardless of which A15 tier you buy. The Antminer S21 family gives you an escape hatch: if your site can support hydro or immersion (a dedicated cooling loop or tank, not just a fan), the S21 Hyd and S21 Immersion variants handle Indonesia's ambient heat far better than any air-cooled unit, at the cost of needing that supporting infrastructure.

For a single unit in a home or small-office setup with decent ventilation, either family's air-cooled models will run — this is a "plan your airflow" problem more than a "one brand handles heat and the other doesn't" problem. For a facility planning multiple racks, the S21 family's hydro/immersion options are the more defensible long-term bet in Indonesia's climate. See our Indonesia mining hub and the Surabaya page for more on local grid and climate conditions by region.

Shipping, duty and warranty from Hong Kong to Indonesia

MinerHaolan ships to Indonesia via DHL Express — flat $150, free over $5,000. Both an Antminer S21 Pro ($4,950) and most Avalon A15 units fall under the flat-rate tier; a hydro or immersion S21 order can clear the free-shipping threshold on its own.

On the import side: personal shipments through DHL's courier ("barang kiriman") process are assessed under Indonesia's tiered consignment rules — duty is exempt only below a FOB value of USD 3, then a flat 7.5% duty band applies from USD 3 up to USD 1,500, with the general/MFN tariff and formal import paperwork required above that. VAT (PPN) applies at an effective 11% for standard goods (12% is reserved for luxury-goods categories, which ASIC miners aren't classified under). Since most single-unit orders in these tables clear USD 1,500, expect the formal-import tariff path rather than the flat consignment rate — budget for that in your landed cost. Our Indonesia buying guide has the full duty and VAT breakdown with sourcing.

Warranty is the same across both brands here: 6-12 months manufacturer warranty as standard, extendable to 18 months through our paid Premium Guarantee — worth considering given DHL round-trip logistics on an RMA from Indonesia.

    Worked power-cost example

We won't quote a specific BTC price or network difficulty here — that number is out of date the moment we publish it, and a projected profitability figure isn't something we can back with evidence. What we can show you, using only catalog specs and a real published electricity range, is the actual running-cost gap between the two lineups.

Assumptions: Indonesia's published mining-relevant electricity range is $0.06-$0.09/kWh (see the Indonesia hub). Running 24/7, 30-day month, comparing two similarly-priced units.

    Antminer S21 Pro (234 TH/s, 3,510W)Avalon A15 Pro (250 TH/s, 4,350W)
    Monthly energy use2,527 kWh3,132 kWh
    Monthly power cost @ $0.06/kWh$151.63$187.92
    Monthly power cost @ $0.09/kWh$227.45$281.88
    Cost per TH/s per month$0.65–$0.97$0.75–$1.13

The A15 Pro costs roughly 15-16% more per TH/s to run every month, tracking almost exactly with its 16% worse J/TH rating. At $0.09/kWh, that gap is about $54/month on these two units alone — money that partially offsets the A15 Pro's lower purchase price the longer you run it. Model your own numbers with your actual contracted rate; this is illustrative, not a quote for your specific site.

    Why trust this guide

Every spec and price above came from our live product catalog at the time of writing — not a manufacturer spec sheet or a competitor's listing. The demand read (S21 having deeper Indonesian marketplace presence than A15) is based on what's actually listed on Tokopedia and Shopee right now, not a survey or a number we measured precisely — where we couldn't measure something, we said so instead of estimating. The power-cost table is arithmetic on catalog specs and a published electricity range, not a profitability projection dressed up as one.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Antminer S21 or Avalon A15 better for Indonesia?+
Neither is universally better. The S21 family has deeper Indonesian marketplace presence and better efficiency (lower running cost); the Avalon A15 family costs less per TH/s upfront. If you're unsure, the S21 is the safer default because of its wider local demand and resale liquidity.
Do these miners work on Indonesia's 230V household power?+
Yes. Indonesia's standard is 230V/50Hz (220V is the same supply under an older PLN standard), and every unit listed here ships with a PSU rated for 200-240V input. Confirm the exact PSU rating on the product page before ordering.
Does the Avalon A15 come in a hydro or immersion version?+
Not in our current catalog. The A15, A15 Pro and A15 XP are air-cooled only; Canaan's hydro and immersion units are built on the separate A1566 platform. The Antminer S21 family offers air, hydro and immersion across multiple tiers.
What import duty should I expect on an order from Hong Kong to Indonesia?+
Personal DHL shipments are assessed under Indonesia's barang kiriman rules: duty-exempt only under USD 3 FOB, a 7.5% flat duty band from USD 3-1,500, and the general MFN tariff with formal import paperwork above USD 1,500. VAT runs at an effective 11% for standard goods. See our Indonesia buying guide for the full breakdown.
What's the warranty and shipping cost to Indonesia?+
DHL Express, flat $150 or free over $5,000. Both families carry a 6-12 month manufacturer warranty, extendable to 18 months via our paid Premium Guarantee.
